Hello, I recently had a discussion with my mum about what our ancestral roots are. We have both made remarks that we think we have some sort of foreign roots on her side, this is because some of my cousins have big massive fat lips (and really they are massive) like africans and also because my aunt who is her sister has asian eyes. We have done the tree back a few hundred years and found nothing.

So I suggested dna testing and found this.

I am looking to get something like this to see the breakdown of my ancestry but I am confused. When I go onto the site to order it, the site talks about previous tests and I have no previous tests.

How do I go about getting this and is this accurate?

Thank you.

It looks like they just take the results of a DNA test you had done elsewhere and analyzes it. They do not actually perform the DNA test themselves. You need to do a DNA test from someplace like 23andme.com or familytreedna.com first.

That sounds like a fascinating ancestral history you have, particularly being in Northern Ireland. The other responders are correct -- you'll need to take a basic DNA test first. You can also try Family Tree DNA - Genetic Genealogy Starts Here. I think that one and 23andme are the best two out there because they have the largest databases. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Well actually I don't know if I 'have' that heritage I am just guessing by the look of some of relatives.

I have heard about 23andme and from what I can see it just says Britain and Ireland and that is not enough for me. Which reliable test will dissect the data down to individual countries?

I listed the countries that are broken down in another thread.

Once you get your 23andMe results please upload them to Gedmatch. There is a chance that you will find "other" ancestry, even minuscule amounts if you view your chromosome paintings and breakdowns. You can also upload your results to FamilyTreeDNA for ~$49. The $49 price varies from time to time.

ETA, the current price is $69 for transfer.

Having thick lips or looking a certain way does not mean anything.

There is no perfect test if you are looking for an exact breakdown. Most populations have mixed a lot over the centuries so there is very little pure ethnic genetics. The tests can only guess when it comes to different European ethnicities, with varying degrees of confidence from population to population.

The best company for this so far is 23andMe. But the postage between US and Europe is expensive and may cost more than the actual test ($99). If you have any African or Asian genetics it will definitely show up. It can separate Northern, Southern, and Eastern European fairly well, and includes some more specific populations within those regions. Since you live in Europe you may get better results than Americans do, whose ancestors left Europe long ago, since your DNA is being compared to contemporary Europeans.

The feedback I've read about DNATribes is that it returned bogus results. BritainsDNA is not considered to be a reputable company.

As far as I know, that's not really possible. Your DNA is not defined by countries since countries are a political concept and their borders have constantly changed over time. Your DNA can tell you what geographical regions you're from and it might be able to tell you whether, for example, you're more Anglo-Saxon than Celtic, but it has no concept of political borders.
