Does anyone know if a small amount of South Asian dna showing up in all of the calculators is common for people of British Isles or just Northern European descent? I have looked over the averages for these populations and it looks like the amounts are small for South Asian. Like .2-.8%. What about a consistent 2.5-3% showing up? Any ideas where it might have come from?

You have to build your family tree to find where it is coming from.

the test tells you what is there. It does not tell you who it came from or when.

I also have this and have wondered about it for a long time.

For a person with solid British ancestry this is easy IMO. Britian colonized India and there were relationships between the two populations. For instance, Princess Diana (and Princes William and Harry) all have an Indian mtDNA haplogroup.

What calculators are you referring to?

You can take most of GEDMatch with a grain of salt.

If you mean one of the commercial DNA services, then you may be seeing a bit of Native American showing up as Asian.
