I read about Angelina Jolie getting genetic testing which is how she found out about potential future breast Cancer. I know deCODEme genetic testing used to provide these answers for a mere $99, but since Amgen bought this company out I cannot find where to buy a deCODEme test or similar. Anyone here know?
23andMe tests for it, as part of their "full package" service, and only costs $99. However it is potentially inaccurate and not the most thorough test, and should not be used to diagnose yourself nor should it be used as a substitute for physician's care.
Personally I'd shell out more money ($500-$1000, assuming insurance coverage) for a more reputable, thorough test, which seems to be what Angelina did.

But where do you find a more thorough test? I have nothing wrong (I hope anyway), but felt one of these test would be good so you know what to do to avoid any inherited diseases if you can. Know where I can find one of these tests anyone????
This would also be a good idea for our adopted children, we do not have birth family history. However, I would be concerned about possible discrimination in the future with employment, etc...have to consider all angles
Genetic tests should be requested by doctors who know about genetic illnesses, the genetic tests available, the usefulness of these tests, and follow-up care.
There is a battle shaping up over genetic testing. The fact that the companies like 23AndMe can offer what they do for the price that they do it means that the companies that sell the tests for medical purposes are charging way too much. Now those companies want to keep those tests proprietary so they can charge more.

It's already prohibited under GINA and I think ACA. Not that it won't stop some employers and health insurance companies from trying...

You would find a more thorough test by going to your doctor and asking about it.

This is the smartest comment on City-Data.com today I think. I agree, obviously. I think these smaller companies like 23andme.com will be eventually eaten up and merged into major companies that only work with medical institutions/physicians = 'mo $$$$$.
