That doesn't appear to be the case in the majority of white Americans.
Whites who are descended from immigrants who came to America through Ellis island are probably less likely to have African ancestry than Whites who are of English and Scotch Irish descent. Compared to the other European immigrant groups, they have have much deeper roots in the United States. Whites descended from Ellis Island immigrants tend to be 3rd-4th generation Americans while Whites who are descended from the English and Scotch-Irish setters tend to be around 5th-8th generation Americans(who were there during the slave era of African Americans).
Of course, your results make it less likely, but not impossible, if your family has been in America more than five generations. How far have you traced your grandmother's family tree?
Sorry! Just now seeing this.
I have traced her lines back very far. Her maternal grandfather was from Carinthia, Austria, so definitely no native from him. Most of her other lines go back to the mid 1700s or sooner in America.
Her interesting thing though is that she swore that BOTH of her grandmother's were Cherokee! Her haplogroup is H1c2. Not a native haplogroup.

"If I were to give a percentage, I'd say the vast majority of White Americans have no Native American ancestry at all. A small percentage of White-identified families have Native ancestry of varying degrees and this will show up on genetic tests and provide a low average for the overall White population of somewhere around 2-3%."
That isn't what DNA tests are showing though. What you might think doesn't make it factual.
Well, there still seems to be an awful lot that do have a African DNA. Every race has an African DNA.
