Those of you who frequent the 23andme forums know what I mean. Anyone know why it's so out of style to be of full European descent?
What I don't understand is why being related in some way to royalty is such a big thing. I am mostly related to the common sort who got shipped off to America or displaced by the British aristocracy and am rather proud that they made something of themselves when the opportunity arose. I like that inheritance.
With a lot of southern heritage, I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of african dna, but it wouldn't make me feel any different about myself. Though it would be neat to find out something in two figures that's scandanavian since so many family names are partly from that source.

I think what intrigues a lot of people is when they are told their whole life that they're "white," as if that's the only thing they ever possibly could be because until fairly recently, it was a bit scandalous (or a LOT scandalous) to have any other sort of "blood" mixed in that "pure, white blood." Now that the stigma is largely removed and people in general are more open to the idea of a multiracial background (or future for their families), it's like uncovering a BIG SECRET. In other words, that's what makes it cool.
Also, just the possibility of other ethnicities and cultures playing a role in our own personal development - cultures and backgrounds that we never even considered as part of our heritage - well, that's interesting as well.
For instance, my extremely "white" - 98 percent northern European/Irish/Scandinavian husband just found out via 23andme that he's actually nearly 2 percent subSaharan African. Now THAT was unexpected, with his totally Nordic, blonde haired, blue eyed, aquiline nosed, red-bearded self. He's also apparently got a smidgen of Jewish blood in him as well. WHODUTHUNKIT?
I can't wait to get my own results back! Any day now!
I don't think it's about not wanting to be white, I think it's more about finding all the pieces. PLENTY of people are incredibly proud of their "white" heritage, be it Scottish, English, Irish, German, Swedish, etc. I do think it's surprising, though, and therefore something that people may make mention of more, when they find out that their lilly white butt actually has a small percentage of African, or Asian, etc. Especially since there probably wasn't any talk of that heritage in their family. But just in general, as I go through life, I hear a lot more about Scottish pride or Irish pride. Then again, I currently live in an area with a lot of Scots.
Regardless of my 23andme results I will always be proud to be German but I would not mind claiming my other race/s if I have anything else like black or Asian.
At 23andMe I see a desire to be Melungeon, Roma, and such. The most recent stories in the news concerning blonde hair and blue eyes in the media is interesting.
Lol, everyone related to me on 23andme seems to run as fast as they can from me when I tell them that I am only half Jewish. They get snobby REAL fast. Now I can see the hell that my parents must have gone through.
