Seems if one provides research to Ancestry it sells it to the world although I know there is a provision to make it private.

No. It is owned by Interesting.com, an independent web publisher started in 1995 by Chris Whitten.
Interesting.com, Inc. was incorporated in the state of New York in 2004. They created WikiAnswers, one of the top 50 websites in the US. Since 2008, their focus has been WikiTree: The Worldwide Family Tree Wiki.
