To see what first names are most common I made a list of ancestors given names. To keep it simple I stuck to direct ancestors only, no lateral relatives. I thought the #1 would be John and Mary, but those were 2nd. The first were Joseph and Elizabeth. Many names were only used once. Now I'm wondering what others might find. Here's my results for the top three.
Out of 81 direct male ancestors:
1. Joseph
2. John
3. William
Out of 57 direct female ancestors:
1. Elizabeth
2. Mary
3. Harriet
Female:
1. Ann/Anne/Anna (24)
2. Mary/Marie/Maria (16)
3. Sarah (9)
If I didn't combine the names of the top two, it would be:
1. Anna (14)
2. Mary (9)
3. Ann (8)
Male:
1. John (17) - if you add Johan and Johann it's 23
2. William/Willem (9)
3. Hans (8)
4. George (7), Jacob (7), Robert (7)
I wasn't sure whether to add Hans to the Johns because technically it's a variant of John, so I added a forth, which was tied among George, Jacob, and Robert.
