Why do you think the cousin is not in your "family" ? Is there not a common ancestor a few generations back ?

Your great uncle has the same genealogy as your grandparent (they are siblings) therefore he can not have a cousin who is not also your cousin. Unless he is a half sibling of your grandparent, or you are mistaken about your relationship, or it's a cousin by marriage, his cousin is your cousin.

Me and my mate are confused cause it's her dad that's cousins to my great uncle so we don't know if we're like 3/4th cousins or distant relatives or not related, we're just confused about how the relationship now works in the family

It might be a cousin by marriage thing. To determine we knew know if this is great uncles's first cousin or what type of cousin.

On one side of my family they call everyone a "cousin" that is related by marriage in some fashion. The term cousin is used in an inclusive manner without the third cousin twice removed language. The use of first cousin is only definitive term they use, all other relationships are just deemed cousins. It is very confusing to sort specifics when relatives of a previous marriage are thrown in.

If your friends dad and your great uncle are first cousins (which also means her dad and your grandparent are first cousins) then you and she are second cousins once removed. She and your parent are second cousins.

If they are more distant cousins then that you will have to know their exact relationship in order to figure out your relationship with your friend.

Yes that's why I said "Unless he is a half sibling of your grandparent, or you are mistaken about your relationship, or it's a cousin by marriage, his cousin is your cousin."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin#Additional_terms

This wiki goes into detail about cousin relationships. You might need make chart to figure your relationships.

First cousins share common grandparents. Second cousins share common greatgrandparents. Third cousins share common greatgreatgrandparents.....count the g's, one g= first, two g's=second, three g's=third cousins.

The "removed" means of a different generation.

So your Mother's first cousin is your first cousin once removed.
(& your Mother's first cousins' children are your second cousins.)
