My grandmother was orphaned in 1894 and after a few failed episodes in a local convent she and her younger brother were sent to an orphanage in Little Falls N Y. Does anyone have any leads on local orphanages -- possibly Catholic -- from 1895-1900 in Little Falls or that area. I can't locate her or the brother in the 1900 census and by the early 1900s she was on her own working as a servant.

The info from Family Search's wiki on this town may help instead:

https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Little_Falls,_New_York

They have the direct contact information for the Historical Society (maybe no longer active if the website is gone but you can try calling the phone number), the City Historian, the City Clerk, the Historical Museum, and the Library. They also have info on where to find old newspapers for this town - maybe you could find a mention of the orphanage in one of the papers.

However, I have to ask, where did you get the info about the place and timeline? If you got it from family members, remember that the details could be wrong.

I just browsed all the 1900 US census records for Little Falls City and Little Falls town in NY, and saw nothing that looks like an orphanage or institution.

It didn't take too long:
One district for Little Falls (town)
Eight districts in 4 wards in Little Falls City. Each district had only 10-30 pages.
I skimmed looking for groups of people not labeled "head" "wife" "son" "daughter."
Found a ton of boarders and lodgers, but these were all adults.

For orphanages, the individuals are usually listed under relation to head of household as something like "student" or "inmate."

It's possible this orphanage was "near" Little Falls but not in Little Falls. You might want to browse the 1900 US census records similarly for other towns in Herkimer County NY, looking for any large group of children not labeled sons or daughters.

There is a St. Vincent Industrial School in Utica in 1900, which is near Little Falls. Full of lots of children, all boys.

There's also a Utica Orphan Asylum, full of boys and girls, in Utica Ward 7, district 63.

There's also a Children's Home in Amsterdam City, Ward 1.

Also a Masonic Home & School in Utica, Ward 13, with adults and children in it.
