My Dad sent me a file showing our family history he had researched, prior to any of these DNA services came out.. Well, the First person in our family history on this soil in the British colonies , VA in 1644, in Surry County. Same as Jamestown county. Died 1676.
His Father was born in Brideswell/London England 1618, came to the Colonies in VA, and died in 1669/70 in Nanesmond/Suffolk County VA etched.
Life was tough back then, as you can see he died before his father..
But, the data my Dad collected over the years is incredible. revolutionary war records, wills, civil war records, WW1/WW2, Vietnam, Criminals, etc etc. Just enlightening.

DNA doesn't hand you your tree on a silver platter anyway. To build a tree, you have to do the paper research. The internet has made it a lot easier (most of the types of records you name are available online - some are even available free from FamilySearch.org), my grandmother did a lot of work on her own tree pre-internet. It really helped me get started.

My Dad worked quite a few years to get all the data he has.
He just sent data of Francis, my great grandpa x9?, who died and grandma remarried. Her son married a lady, who was aunt to w Presidents william harrison and benjamin harrison. Not sure how that worked as one potus was his grandpa. Keep it in the family I guess, unless she was a great aunt.
But she is buried with my grandmother x9? Anne Mansfield, formerly m surname. In jamestown
