I want to get an ancestry.com gift for someone for Christmas, but I'm a little confused by their website. It seems they offer a test, and separately, a subscription. Does the subscription not include the test? Does the test not include the information regarding other people who you may be related to (family trees)?

Thanks for your help in clearing this up for me. I was unable to find a clear answer on their website.

You can belong to Ancestry and do research without doing a DNA test.

When/If you do the DNA test, you can register it on the site and link it to your tree, which will automatically show you what other Ancestry members you are related to.

The test is not included in the price of an Ancestry membership. It's usually about $100.

You can have an Ancestry account with having a paid subscription. To do their DNA test you have to have an account but not a paid subscription. I have had an Ancestry account for 7 years but have only had a paid subscription twice, each for a couple months. A paid subscription lets you view other people's trees and pictures / stories, view official census documents, see who is in your DNA Circles, etc. You loose no data when you go back to an unpaid account, you just can't view official documents saved to people on your tree.
