For some time I have been looking up a surname but there is also a publisher of books with the same name so with google searches the publishers name comes up instead of what I am looking for. Any way to solve this?

Not to open a new thread about same subject, I have a new question so I will continue here. Some years ago I found the passengerlist of my ancestor, I wrote down the date but could easily access the list. From then to now a new pc. Went to look up the list and it is not there. I do not remember the website either. Tried all sorts of google searches so far nothing. It is a ship that sailed in 1777. Anyone know how I can find this?

In an advanced search you can list some key words that you want to omit from the search, like "publisher" for instance.

This might be the website you're looking for The Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

Ellis Island wasn't a port of entry in 1777.

It's possible the site doesn't exist anymore. I know Progenealogists.com used to have a page for early US immigrant passenger lists, but they removed it. You can usually find them elsewhere though, if you tell us the name and details of the person/list you're looking for, we might be able to help find another source.

I'm not sure how useful it is to google a simple surname. If you're looking for info on the origins of a surname, there are plenty of sites that have a search for just that, such as: Last Name Meanings and Origins | Search Surnames at Ancestry.com

If you're looking for a specific person, it is best to search by their full name and details.

However, chadgates is correct that there are options to exclude certain results. You can use the advanced search ( https://www.google.com/advanced_search ), or you can just use the minus symbol in front of any keyword you don't want to include in results. For example searching: "schuster -publisher" omits results for the publisher Simon & Schuster.

There are others but ships guild transcribers lists are the biggest.

In many search engines if you put what you wish filter out inside quotation marks with a minus sign in front that will work. Not all search windows are created equal, but worth a try. So if you are searching for Eisenhower but not Dwight, it would look like this in the search window:

"eisenhower" "-dwight"

Anyone know if the rootsweb forum/message board is really free no strings attached? The terms & condition page fails to open to read the rules tried 2 days now and nothing.

Yes, they are really free, just like this one is. However, they are the same as Ancestry.com's message boards: Message Boards - so you'll need an Ancestry.com account to use them. You can sign up for a free "registered guest" account at Ancestry here: http://secure.ancestry.com/register/...istration.aspx - no strings attached, you don't need to put in a credit card number, etc.
