Ok. I reset the cookies.

Wow! There was some serious research there. That loss of culture probably would have been devastating for the dad because he was so ingrained in the culture.

There is a person I would like to take a dna test to find out her great grandfather's real identity, but doubt she will. Her great grandfather and my great grandfather ran moonshine and were killed together. They were both living under aliases at the time. My great grandfather's real identity was discovered, but not her great grandfather's. I suspect the two were related to each other as 'cousins' because you can't trust just anyone with your still. Lol!

Use google chrome incognito to open the link. So if I use 23andme, my results get published in some vast database that might allow others to find me if they are genetically linked to me like in the article?

I know who I am....no DNA test needed. Why open that can of worms! If it is even "true".

While I get your overall point, genealogists and family historians often pursue this hobby because they want to understand their connections with others. It's part of how we define ourselves. To have that up-ended with DNA can bring about a painful identity crisis. But your caution is well-heeded. If one is not prepared to face the family skeletons, it's best not to go looking for them.
