Humanity is a species, not a race. Acknowledging and embracing different races doesn't make one racist. Racism is the belief that any one race is superior or inferior to others/another. Therefore, this topic isn't about racism, so if you have nothing on topic to add, don't bother.

Italian's from Southern Italy are very dark skinned b/c at one time, they inter-bred with Blacks...so their heritage would be mixed...
The Mediterranean area can be very mixed, but you may be overestimating the African influence.

From Y-DNA: "Ultimately, the North African male contribution to Sicily was estimated between 6% and 7.5%.[12][29] Overall the estimated Balkan and North Western European paternal contributions in South Italy and Sicily are about 63% and 26% respectively."

mtDNA: "African Haplogroup L lineages are relatively infrequent (less than 1%) throughout Italy with the exception of Latium, Volterra, Basilicata and Sicily where frequencies between 2 and 3% have been found."

Autosomal DNA: "A 2013 study by Botigué et al. 2013 applied an unsupervised clustering algorithm, ADMIXTURE, to estimate allele-based sharing between Africans and Europeans. Regarding Italians, the North African ancestry does not exceed 2% of their genomes."

Southern Italians are more likely to have large portions of Middle Eastern DNA, than African: "By using the ADMIXTURE software, the authors obtained at K = 4 the lowest cross-validation error. The HapMap CEU individuals showed an average Northern Europe (NE) ancestry of 83%. A similar pattern is observed in French, Northern Italian and Central Italian populations with a NE ancestry of 70%, 56% and 52% respectively. According to the PCA plot, also in the ADMIXTURE analysis there are relatively small differences in ancestry between Northern Italians and Central Italians while Southern Italians showed a lower average admixture NE proportion (43,6%) than Northern and Central Italy, and a higher Middle East ancestry of 28%. The Sardinian samples display a pattern of crimson common to the others European populations but at a higher frequency (70.4%)."

Then you shouldn't be insisting one's race is that which is above 51%.

Why do you think a person can't have more than one race?

But that means you have more than one race, which according to you isn't possible - according to you, one can only have one race and it's the one above 51%. What happens if someone doesn't have one race above 51%? What if they're 30% White, 30% Native American, and 30% African? Roll your eyes all you want, but it's not as simple as you're trying to claim, nor do you have the right to tell people which of their ancestries they should or shouldn't identify with.

I do think that too many people place too much emphasis on race but I do not appreciate you infusing politics in the genealogy forum. That topic really needs to stay in the politics forum you know the one that can't possibly get any more toxic than it is.

People that don't have an interest in genealogy or have any thing of value to add to the discussion really should find another forum(politics section comes to mind).

You are free to identify as you want - mixed race, white, black, hispanic, etc., - all could accurately be applied to you it is just a matter of how you think of yourself.
