Trying to find an on line source for 1950's city directories for Philly. Trying to help a friend with some ancestry info. We can place her there in 1953-1957 but no other info, other than that and she married and divorced between those years, and, had a child born in 1957. Can't find anything about her before or after those years, like she never existed.

Is there any way to look up a 1953 marriage license for Philly on line without having to order the certificate??

TIA

No, the Philadelphia marriage index is only available up to 1951, as far as I know, and it's only the index, not the full records.

There's a city directory for Philly in 1950 on Ancestry.com, and then there's some white pages in U.S. Public Records Index, 1950-1993, Volume 1 and 2, which covers the 1950s in Philly.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania had Philly phone books covering the 1950s: "Microform of telephone directories from 1936-1975 (XR 119:1-74l; drawers 138-139)" - https://hsp.org/collections/catalogs...ty-directories

Thanks for the replies. I've looked at those avenues already, with no luck. Hoping a continued Google search will come up with something unexpected at some point.

Thanks again!

Perhaps there is a hardcover directory at the main (city) library in Philadephia if you know anyone in the area who can look for you.

I'd suggest you contact the main library in Philly and have them do a quick search for you. They probably have it on microfilm or a hard copy.

I know our local history department does not yet include a lot of 1950s era information online with ancestry or family search. When I asked, they said it was because they like to wait 70 years before releasing that info on the public domain but they do take requests via phone, in person, or via email to do a quick search for available material.

Was she born before the census of 1940? Have you found her on the 1940 census?
