I need some advice please on how this would be done. Some in my Family said I should help people in Family history and charge them for service.

Question is:

How would one charge people in exchange for helping them find an Ancestor and Genealogy Documents? I not talking about a professional genealogist but someone private who help people with their Genealogy Research (finding their Ancestor, Documents, et,c.) in exchange for Money?

How would you do that or where would you begin? How would it be done?

To be honest, I'm not sure you'd make much doing this - there are volunteers willing to do this kind of thing for free.

That's hard. I don't think it would be profitable. Genealogy is something many of us do for fun. Like PA2UK said many people will do this for free. Many people also think you should share for free. I do, but ran into one awkward situation a few years back where someone wanted all my stuff and asked what it would cost to get copies. I threw out $10 knowing it would cost me well over that to make prints, photocopies, and mail the package to her in another state. She complained to other relatives and then expected me to scan in everything I had. I threw my hands up and backed away for a while. If I have to go to that much effort, you do it my way. I have shared much of what I own, but it is on my own time table and by my methods.

The genealogy programmes today are available either for free or for a small yearly fee, are so easy to work with, there is very little need for help.

Use the Help button and just ask the question ...
The answers are always there, albeit hard to find sometimes !

If you have the right tools and are really good at the research end of things, you might advertise under 'Services' in Craigslist and see if you get any hits. You might include some anecdotal examples/illustrations of information you could help people locate through your service.

I think there are many people who would like to track their genealogy and are willing to pay for it, but, don't have the time, interest or knowledge to do so. You could get started by asking them to pay a basic research fee, supplemented by whatever bonus they think the results justify.

Prior to providing paid research it is a good idea to consult an attorney to develop a contract agreement/engagement letter and a CPA for tax implications & to set up business records properly, AND to get the necessary state/local business license.

I suggest that the engagement letter include a retainer amount which the client pays up front & you work off of. The engagement letter should specify what you will do & what the deliverable will be & within what time frame your work will be performed. And that you will not exceed X amount fee without written consent of client.
