My father just did a MyHeritageDNA test and got the results back. His parents both had grandparents from Ireland so the results were not too surprising except the North African:

47% Irish/Scottish/Welsh
32% Scandinavian (could this be Viking DNA in British Isles? Because we have no family history of Scandinavia)
18% English
1.7% North African

He's gone pretty far in the family tree research but so far we don't see anything other than Western European names.

Is the 1.7% something we should theoretically be able to chase down in recent history?

The 23&me result shows a timeline for the various contributors.

1.7% from 500 years ago means almost nothing.
From 100 years ago... check the woodpile.

That Scandinavian percentage is pretty high. Was your grandmother a Viking? I wonder if your Irish or German family lived near a seaport in Ireland or Europe for a couple generations where there might be more diversity and someone with a North African ancestor got into the family line...maybe in the 1600s. I have about 1.5% Scandinavian and my (23andme) timeline says it would be 6 to 8+ generations back to a full Scandinavian person, most likely in the late 1600s. That makes some sense to me based on history in the Baltic region where my family lived.

Myheritage does the same thing to me with the Scandinavia. I have maybe one Swedish ancestor who lived in the 18th century, yet they say Scandinavia is my main region, with 30%+ showing. I do have extensive English, Scottish, and Irish ancestors which Myheritage shows at about 20% Irish/Scottish/Welsh and 0% English, so I have to figure MyHeritage has a tough time sorting out British Isle folks.

Not too surprising for an admixed group, but for contrast Ancestry says I am 73% British, and 1% Scandinavia, and only trace Scottish/Irish/Welsh. Take the ethnicity guesses with the grain of salt, they will differ.

That's sort of what I was afraid of...these are fairly salty grains altogether. I did upload the DNA kit to another site which I'll post here once they've processed it.

Such a small amount may just be noise, like a false positive. It could also just be coming from a neighboring region. The ethnicity report is merely an estimate and I would not take it literally. Additionally, MyHeritage generally have the least unreliable ethnicity report. I really wouldn't try to go chasing down an ancestry based solely on the ethnicity report, it would very likely be a waste of time.

MyHeritage is trash !
I got their results too, as per My Heritage I am 49% Native American, and only one of my great grandmother is Native American.

Well I don't think it means that you can start using the 'n' word in public.

The term "North African" has no distinct racial or ethnic meaning.

North Africans are Caucasians, they are Middle Eastern.
Take a look at the "Berbers"
