I've been working on the ancestry and probably running into the same problem as others. Has anyone actually had old ancestor's photos cleaned, or know how to safely clean? I've inherited old photos from late 1800s early 1900s and a FEW of them are pretty dirty. I'm looking for someone to answer who has ALREADY done this. If you have done this, I would appreciate a response. Thanks.

Take the photos to a photographer and see what they say.

I had some old photographs reprinted. I wanted the family to have their own copies. So I went to the professional photographer that did our family portraits and asked if they could be redone on similar paper. They came up with something. They could also increase the size and 'repair' scratches.

Now my mom had an old painting cleaned. She went to an artist that did restoration work. I'm sure if you call around you'll find something. I think your best bet is with a professional photographer that has a good reputation.

Or someone good with Photoshop? I have a few pics of my dad that are really dirty from hanging in our gas station that I can't replace. Had wondered a few weeks ago if they could be restored

Just google - photo restoration - along with the name of your location if you want it done locally.

Before you try to clean them, be sure you have taken photos of the photos. Just in case something goes wrong.
