Mediterranean
Not necessarily from Italy.
It means someone in your family is from Southern Europe.
Some companies do narrow it down specifically to Italy (23andMe, MyHeritage, and LivingDNA. That doesn't mean it's totally accurate, but having that significant amount of even Southern Europe when you're supposedly Northern European is still unusual.
My DNA test showed 56% Italian.
That is interesting, since there is no mention whatsoever in any family lore about Italy or any Italians.
Family lore says Germany (Pennsylvania Dutch), Ireland, Scotland, and England.
Hmmm...
What company did you test with? Have you looked at your DNA matches?
I eagerly await my DNA results. I don’t expect any surprises, but I do hope for some. I know I go back to England and Sweden, but where they came from before that could have some surprises.
Are there companies to avoid and companies that people think are better, for testing your DNA?
I saw a report about the major players on NBC a while back. All 3 had the exact same results for a set of triplets. Jeff Rossen (he’s the NBC consumer watchdog guy) had to admit they all were good and accurate.
I believe the human race is a mixture of everything. It's all in there. We're silly to think we can even create perfect categories of something that's been evolving for so long.
I wouldn't give a fig no matter what "race" I have in me. My mom claims 100% Irish (FWIW) but I have a strong suspicion there's Asian in there somewhere ;P I asked my mom what we were when I was a kid -- she said my sister and I were "mutts." So that's how I've thought of myself. Just a mix of stuff. What exactly the stuff is I don't know yet but I'm happy with whatever comes out and have no preconceived notions.
The term "white" is probably wrong, here in the United States is an ETHNIC group, (white, anglo-saxon, protestant). The right term should be the Caucasian Race.
Are Caucasians only from Europe?
the answer is not, people from North Africa and the Middle East are Caucasians as well.
There are a couple of ads on TV for genetic testing services that just crack me up. The person says, "I had no idea I was part _______ (Native American, Irish, whatever), now I embrace my heritage." And now they're collecting NA pottery or clog dancing.
I figure your real heritage is what went on in your particular family, not what a bunch of people you never knew were related did hundreds of years ago.
Yes, one of my grand mothers is Native American
My Y-DNA is Irish =R1b1b2a1a2f*
and my MtDNA is Native American = C1
Ahh; that does explain it!
My uncle, like my mother, is first generation American born Greek. But inexplicably turned up with some Native American with 23&me. Using Gedmatch it seems there is some East Asian influencing this, which is why your result caught my eye.
