Big deal, well only as important as any other ancestors. Are there any immigrant ancestors you have studied and assign some sort of significance to? If so then these non-European ones are no different. Ancestors are all individuals in the end not percentages of ethnicity, so those percentages represent people and at the right levels for someone around 300+ years ago or so.

Are Caucasians only from Europe?
the answer is not, people from North Africa and the Middle East are Caucasians as well.
So are people from India. Indians are dark-skinned Caucasians. Which upset a lot of people back in the 80s, when I married a guy from India. One (ex) friend told me, "I don't care WHAT you say, he is NOT WHITE!"

Actually I did not care whether or not he was "white" myself, but it sure did give me great pleasure to upset bigots with the idea that dark-skinned people might be just as "Caucasian" as they were, even if they weren't "white", LOL!

I figure your real heritage is what went on in your particular family, not what a bunch of people you never knew were related did hundreds of years ago.
Exactly. My dad used to say "All these people who are so proud of their heritage are putting an awful lot of trust in people they never knew." EG cheating on a spouse is nothing new. I especially liked the story about the white supremacist who had a DNA test done and found out he had significant African American heritage. He ended up claiming the test had been faked, LOL! Talk about self-hating.

As I said before, here in the United States the term "white" is an ETHNIC group. You have to be Caucasian, Anglo Saxon and Protestant in order to be "white"....LOL
So, if you are Italian, Catholic, you are not white.
I have seen many hispanics with blue eyes, and blond hair. Take a look at Jorge Ramos from Univision. But since Jorge speaks spanish, and is catholic, and was born in Mexico, he is not white.

To be fair, the article's title did not specify what part of the data they found surprising. Did you read it? It's much more than just the average African results in African Americans. The study analyzed the average make up of all different Americans.

You also have to remember that the average I quoted is probably being dragged down a little by the fact that many people who have one black parent and one white parent may self identify as African American, yet that means they are only 50% or less African. That will drag the average down somewhat.

I do think some people are surprised to realize just how extensive slave rape was - everyone knows it happened, but I think people outside the genealogy field don't really consider just how common it was. On the issue of white on black rape after slavery ended, I'm not sure how fair it is to claim it continued to be as extensive. Certainly, it happened and continues to happen, but I would not say it was the norm. You speak as though black men (or any men who aren't white) never rape anyone, and as though white men are going around raping everyone.

Very simple explanation as to why so many people of white European ancestry are getting back results showing some (usually smallish) amount of Middle Eastern, north African, etc.

For a long period of time the Barbary pirates (Ottoman Turks) had this habit of raiding coastal European villages, as far away as Ireland, primarily setting out from and returning to ports in Tripoli and Algiers. Hundreds of thousand of "Christians" (mostly women and children) were kidnapped and sold as slaves. Whereas other cultures generally took slaves to be workers, the Barbary pirates/Ottoman Turks largely took them as sex slaves. They ended up in various countries in north Africa, Turkey, and other parts of the Ottoman empire in the mideast. A very interesting but sad story.

That is the primary reason there exists some European genetics in many of those countries. If I recall correctly this taking of European slaves only ended in the late 18th or early 19th century due to a combined effort by England, France, and even the US in Jefferson's time.

Caucasian doesn't necessarily equal white. The US census, for example, has never used the term "Caucasian". It has always distinguished differences among Caucasians (ie, White versus Asian Indian, etc). For some time in the US, the term Caucasian did seem to get used synonymously with "white" but it was largely a US phenomenon and arguably, an inaccurate one which is only just now beginning to decline as people realize they are not necessarily the same thing.

I would say your ex friend was right - your husband is not white. He IS Caucasian, as are white people, but not all Caucasians are white. That doesn't make me a bigot - to be a bigot, I would have to feel that white people are superior to other Caucasians (or other races), and they are not.

If it's the same case that I saw, I have to point out that the test was done with the now defunct company AncestryBYdna, which went out of business because they used outdated methods which largely provided widely inaccurate results. Granted, even today ethnicity reports are only an estimate, but on a continental level, they are pretty accurate (sub-continental is where results get ify). AncestryBYdna was not even accurate on a continental level, meaning it's very possible his results were inaccurate. Again, if it's the same case I saw, he actually dismissed it as "noise" (like a false positive), not faked. As much as I hate to defend a racist, I don't wish to use inaccuracies against them because I don't wish to stoop to their level and use propaganda like that. If there's been a case where a more accurate/up to date company tested a racist and found significant African results (because truly, results around or under about 1% may just be noise), then I'd definitely love to see that.

That's complete and utter nonsense. Most of the Irish (not Scots-Irish) who came to the US were Catholic and they are definitely white. Religion has NOTHING to do with being white. My British husband is Catholic and his entire ancestry as far back as I can trace is British and Irish. Are you really trying to claim he's not white?

I married into a pretty racist family even though my husband wasn’t. They were all generally light haired with green eyes but the whole family had wide noses and very full lips. They said that was their German heritage . His mother started into genealogy and went back on the family tree on the father side to find out , on one side of the family was one of the original Grand Dragons of the Klu Klux Clan and on the other side was the black family members and they all were from the same genetic tree . They were all decended 13 generations back from a freed slave that was the child from the family that owned them . My husband was OK with it but the rest of the family was not and it was never brought up again
