We have one story like that in my family. My ggggg grandfather fathered a child with a slave. He freed the child/ young man around 1814. The son wasn't allowed to marry a white woman so he cohabitated with her and produced children. The generations after that often 'passed' as white. Some family members married back into the family. Same folks are finding 1-2% African Ancestry. I've been told that may just be noise.

In regards to their 1-2% percent African, could be North African, which is Caucasian.
If that 1-2% is Sub-Saharan, then they are Blacks.
Most people with Mediterranean ancestry, such as Spaniards, Italians, Greek, Turks, etc, have some North African DNA, which is not black, just people from northern Africa, which are Middle Eastern (caucasian)
In my particular case, I have around 9% sub-saharan, and is from one of my great grandmother, she is mixed.

Yeah. Years and years ago (like almost 20 years ago) when they first started coming out with home DNA tests for "ethicity" (which are not, btw, all that accurate), someone posted her results on a largely Mormon genealogical forum, stating that her test showed something like 26% African ancestry.
She actually asked how that could possibly have happened. Seriously.
