As an African-American of majority West African descent, I find this most peculiar because it's only slightly more genetically distant than my ancient Yoruba. I do wonder if it's because my mtDNA may in fact be of similar origin to some of those of modern or ancient Egypt. In comparison, the genetic distance between modern Yoruba and ancient Yoruba is 5.124; Modern Egyptians to Ancient Egyptians is 12.86; Coptic Egyptians to Ancient Egyptians is 7.822; Mozabite Berbers to Ancient Egyptians is 24.15.
I do get other matches to ancient figures(Ancient Britain, Briton/Celtic Roman Gladiators, Scythia, late kingdom Egypt), but the genetic distance is a lot greater than the one relatively close Egyptian match.
Yes, I'm sure they were able to carry their tree back thousands of years! Not to mention truth in advertising?
Some can. I can because I have an ancestor from the 1600's who is one of the ones who are called "Gateway Ancestors" with proven trees going back many thousands of years. I go back to William the Conqueror and to Charlemagne. However, I have doubts whether any of this could be in my DNA. Is it a scam? Maybe. I wouldn't count on it's accuracy, and I would question what they are doing with your data. Personally at this moment I have no desire to do any DNA testing to find out where my ancestors came from because I know from my tree. I might want to do one at a future time to see if I could find any relatives of my grandfather because that link is lost but I have my doubts as to if any exist that they would have done DNA anyway or if any made it out alive after WWII (not Jewish but German farmers)
When I used the Free analysis, my results were suspect. I had Ottoman, Ancient Egyptian, Roman Hispania and some other mostly mediterranean cultures show up. Since I'm black - primarily of sub saharan descent I was skeptical. Also my closest "ancient civilization" matches were Moors and Huns. I checked back a few months later and did the paid version and got Huns and Bantu. They eventually updated it to Bantu and Al-Andalus.

Oh, one more.. my DNA Spotlight..
I matched the Roman Gladiator who has Egyptian origin. I matched 3 other Egyptian samples... but only one of all those matches is actually a fairly close match. Turns out its the two brothers of Sub Saharan descent.

I’ve submitted my sample to them as well. Although the site seems a bit skiddish and some people’s results seem to repeat I can say though I don’t have the results as some that have posted here. Also not forgetting it’s testing your DNA against a database of their archaeological research and matching your sample with the closest matching samples of all the ancient civilizations throughout the known world. With that being said, MTA has given me some of the same results as FTDNA as far as modern population is concerned based on genetic closeness, but not the same as 23&Me. Which for me places the accuracy of their algorithm for GD and “closest matching populations” above that of 23&Me. It also might be worth it to place a bit of money into the site to see the “supposed” haplogroups of your ancestors. Very fun site.

Is anyone else having the same issue?
Someone posted their results in a DNA FB group I belong to. I came back to my post here to copy my results and looked over everything and noticed that with free accounts, the results "expire" in 24 hours. Of course they don't say what they do with our RAW DNA...
