Maybe this will help. The chart below shows the genetic overlap among the different populations used in the reference panel at AncestryDNA. The closer the dots are to one another, the more genetically similar they are. Note how the dots for Germany have significant overlap with several other neighboring regions, making it difficult, sometimes even impossible, to tell them apart.
