I am trying to find information about an estranged relative who may have passed away in the past few months. I know the city they lived in, but do not know anything about their burial/cremation, etc.

Does anyone have suggestions of best places to start looking for this information?

Do cities maintain a record of deaths? Or counties? Or is by cemetary?

I know there is the Find-a-Grave website, which I have used to find some distant relatives, but my understanding is that someone would have to photograph the grave and then post it there for it to show up.

TIA

The state handles vital records/certificates, though sometimes you can order them through the city/county too. However, for a record this recent, there might be privacy restrictions on it - it really depends on the state laws.

There does not have to be a photo, plenty of FG memorials have no photo, but it does require someone adding the memorial to FG.

Try just googling the person's name, sometimes the obituary is still online at the funeral home's website, or Legacy, or some other obituary data mining site.

I've found them by googling their name.

If you're just looking for basic information, not certificates, Google their name with the word "obituary".

Sites like Legacy.com combine obits from many sites, but may or may not have the one you're looking for yet if it's really recent.
