I'll go with Lettice, often called 'Lettie.' I have a couple of those among my ancestors (Scots-Irish).

Letticia Gibbons is my best guess. Of course, they sometimes misspell the names. So even if we decoded the exact letters of the script, it might not match the person's actual name.

It's probably Leticia. Not something strange.

I really appreciate everyone taking a look at this! This was my great grandmother's grandmother.

My great grandmother named one of her childern Letitia with the middle name of "Given" - nobody knows where it came from and we think this might be related somehow. She always went by "letty"

Ancestry.com translates the writing to: Mother: Lethsn Gibbon

When I searrch records, it appears Letitia Gibbon(s) was a common Irish name back then. Trying to crosssearch and locate any brothers/sisters so the search continues. Thanks.

Is it possible that the word "given" was denoting the proper spelling of the first name? Probably not, but I immediately thought of one's "given name"--distinguishing it from "Letty". Of course, it would depend upon how it was written. Context is important.

Oh, and my vote would be for Letticia Gibbons.

My guess would be "Lettrice". Looks like there's a 'r' in there.

That's a good indication.

You should also keep in mind that a lot of old records like this frequently have spelling errors. Names got mangled all the time. Obviously, Laticia (or Latticia) did not fill out this form herself, so you need to keep an open mind about the correct spelling. Just from this small sample, I'm about 99% certain it's from a death certificate for one of Laticia's children. Only a doctor can fill out a death certificate--that's why the penmanship is so crummy.

There's also a 50/50 chance that the doctor asked the informant for the correct spelling of "Laticia" or "Latticia." More often than not, doctors more 60 or 70 years ago would spell a name "as the spirit moved them." You shouldn't accept any spelling as 100% gospel. There's also a chance that the informant was wrong if the doctor did ask for the correct spelling. She could have mangled the name and gave the doctor the wrong spelling. Ive seen that happen numerous times in death certificates for my own family.

In my own tree I'm always a little suspect of the spellings of names until I find several documents that repeat the same spelling over and over again. --But the case is really settled if I can actually find a document that the person filled out themselves and actually signed their own name.
