I started to fill in things on Ancestry, perhaps I'll continue. I actually found someone on 23andme who I am pretty sure is related to one of the people in my handwritten tree(last name Safir). I sent him a note several months ago and never heard back so he either has died or never got my message.

I'm not younger and my parents are gone. All I have left are my aunt (youngest sister of my father who is now 88) and uncle (who just turned 90 and we had a fun zoom call to wish him a happy birthday!). That side was fully documented by this same uncle. I'm also descended from immigrants, like so many others in the U.S. But my grandparents fled the pogroms of Kishinev around 1915ish. oh wait, my grandmother arrived in 1912 which I just learned a couple of years ago when my sister and I were going through our mother's stuff. I found her Inspection Card when she entered the U.S. from Quebec. Yea, that was a surprise too. All this time I imagined she came in at Ellis Island. I actually still get the chills thinking about this 17 year old young woman traveling alone to the U.S. from Russia (it was Russia then, now it's Moldova, if she's from Kishinev too). I have no information on how my grandfather got here.

The reason I bring up the pogroms is because I wonder how much I will be able to find as I imagine there aren't many records of Jewish people?

Roselvr: my grandparents on my mother's side are Samuel Leiderman (he's from Kishinev, not sure if she is from there) and Pearl Rabinowitz. Pearl came over on the Corsican from England. She started somewhere in Russia, got on the ship in Liverpool on 10/18/12 and arrived 10/27/12. My niece found the passenger list and there are no other Rabinowitz's listed so that's why I think she travelled alone. If you can find anything, that would be great!

Thanks again for all this great information. I surely appreciate it!!
Do you know if Pearl and Samuel were married when she came over? I'm seeing a Perel Laedermann born in Russia, with a Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada immigration document. Date is Apr 1912. I had attached it then realized it was in her married name so unattached it in case it's not her.

That was Family Tree Maker. I'm sure RootsMagic does something similar - descendant reports are fairly standard in genealogy.

Since you already filled some of your tree out on Ancestry, Family Tree Maker or RootsMagic will be ideal, you can download the tree you started at Ancestry and just carry on from there.

Best genealogy tools of 2021
that was probably me that started the trees for Sam and Pearl. Pretty sure she is buried next to him but she died many years later so maybe not? and it's been too long since I've been there so cannot recall. They're definitely in the same cemetery along with my father and other relatives.

I did register at familysearch but never saw any of this information so thank you!! I didn't know Sam's birth and death dates so I'm going to fill those in on Ancestry. Clearly I need to spend more time on familysearch.

Thank you so much!!! I'll be reading all your links later. I'm supposed to be working but also waiting for my lunch to arrive so thought I'd see if anyone posted anything and voila!! yes indeedy.

One question: would I be able to download the information I'm putting in Ancestry into another family tree software without a subscription? Because I don't want to spend all this time keying it in if I can't use it if I decide not to subscribe.
I use software called Family Tree maker. It connects up to Ancestry.com, but works independently. You can do regular trees, and also ancestor charts, descendent charts whatever they’re called, like what Rose showed. I use the German term ahnentaful. Because it’s fun to say.

Now you do have to purchase the software, it’s 80 bucks. I found it quite easy to use. And rather seamless.

It is not the only genealogy software out there. However it’s the only one I’ve ever used. At one point it was actually partof ancestry.com. They have since sold that off and it’s owned by a different company.

One other thing is that you should check with your local library. Libraries sometimes have ancestry.com available. Whether you can access it through your own home computer or not I don’t know. And given that there’s always a lot of different systems you would have to consult them to find out if you could do that and how to do it.

I prefer the old fashioned hard research so that’s always my preference rather than clicking on ancestry leaves that may or may not be the right thing. Also keep your eyes open because frequently Ancestry has free weeks. Usually around patriotic holidays. Which is kind of amusing because that’s usually when my relatives come out of the woodwork asking me questions. Everybody seems to sort of get interested around those times.

Happy hunting!

Just google it, it's made by MacKiev - it's the first results when you google it. Mackiev .com (I don't want to post a link in case it's considered spam).

The people working on Pearl and Samuel are TobyOberg, and K Potter. KPotter is the one who made the trees.
