I don't know the difference between that, and "second cousin!" yikes....have heard the terms all of my life.

I wonder what to call my first cousins' children.

Also, what do my kids call them?

Guess you can see that I haven't searched this up on the internet. Now that I see this section's subject title, figured I'll ask here and learn something, hopefully.

The degree refers to the distance from a common ancestor. First cousins have 2 grandparents in common; second cousins have 2 great-grandparents in common, and so forth.

"Removed" refers to the number of generations removed you are from the relative.

First cousin removed because you are one generation removed from them.

Second cousins.

Here is a neat "cousin calculator": Cousin Calculator, Relationship Chart & Relationship Terms. Calculate the relationship between 2 people who share a common ancestor.

In order to use it, you just need to know your and the other person's relationship to your common ancestor.

You call your first cousin's children first cousins once removed and your children call your first cousins' children their 2nd cousins.

Thank you. It certainly is easy.

I wish I had had that chart a decade ago. One of the distant cousins I found online gave me info to get in touch with yet another relative, the daughter of my father's half-brother that my Dad didn't really know or know well.

I didn't realize she and I are actually first cousins.

Here's a good chart from family search that illustrates it.
