Where you come from and what your place of birth are, are two different things, that may or may not be the same place. My kids were born in South Korea, but they've lived almost their entire lives in Maryland, and thus they come from Maryland. But when the form asks for place of birth, I always say South Korea. See the difference?

From when I was very little, I have lived in umpteen places and many different countries so, where am I from?
When it comes to "place of birth", then I say Bandung, Indonesia...
Just for fun, when the interviewer is right there, I ask if he or she even knows where that is...
Almost always, I draw a blank stare!
Also, because I was born there, does that make me Indonesian? Nope, I am American, from the USA!
My youngest daughter was born in Southern Germany. Does that make her German, Nope, no never!

I agree, that some countries give you some "birthrights" when you are born in their country.
OK..., so you have some birthrights, but does that really make her German?

So in essence, what is that info (where you are born) really worth?
What does matter is if you are contributing or in other words have some redeeming value that the people around you can appreciate?

Last but not least, if they ask for my "race", I always state "human".
My mother is of German descent, and my father comes from Scottish descent with one (1) Chinese person in his line... The rest is all white! Sadly the genes for my Asian background is so strong, that I am a "brownface" ! I married a true English white girl and all our kids are brown faces. None of them looks like their Mum! My accent is so different, they can never figure out where I am from...

In regular conversation, the town I came home to (and lived the first few years of my life). For official documents, the city of the hospital where I was actually born. In my case they're in different states since I'm 6-7 minutes from the border.

Where you are from is a state of mind as well. You might be "from" somewhere but not "of" somewhere. See the difference?

I do, but that would make for some very confusing genealogical records for future generations to interpret.

You can be born in the US of parents born in the US but if your grandparent was Irish you can apply for Irish citizenship and have a Euro passport as well as your US passport. In some rare cases you can claim Irish citizenship if your great-grandparent was Irish. I have a friend that did that due to an Irish grandparent. I have an Irish great-grandparent but can't meet the technical criteria. I don't know if other countries do the same.

Italy offers the same possibility if grandparent was born in Italy. My son is trying to fathom the process currently.

My mother, his grandmother, born in Italy in 1921. Emigrated to US in 1927. One issue is whether or not she was naturalized, as a child, by way of her father's naturalization papers. Italy also wants about 8 or 10 "certified" documents.

Son has an "immigration" lawyer working on this.
