I've worked for years on my family tree on Ancestry's website. I was not aware that when you download the GEDCOM file and delete the tree that the media files do not go with you. Ugh! Any ideas on how to save the media files without downloading them one at a time?
Thank you!! Someone in Reddit said the same thing also. Someone else recommended RootMagic 8. It's nice that Root magic offered a free trial whereas you have to buy Family Tree Maker before trying it. I'll give it a go and hope for the best. Thank you again!

You mean the files are not in the downloaded back-up? I have downloaded it before, but I never checked it. I just assumed everything was in there. That should be a no brainer that everything is included in the downloaded file.

GEDCOM was developed in 1984. It’s a text file. So, no, it doesn’t contain anything in media format.

Go for Family Tree Maker (FTM). I checked it out and it's through Ancestry. It's completely worth the $80. You can go through the gallery in your current family tree and the photos should still be there, just add them as the profile photo I was able to find a few of mine, thankfully.

FTM is no longer owned by Ancestry (but the tree sync feature with Ancestry trees still works). They used to own it, but they decided to discontinue it. There was such a huge protest that they instead decided to sell it t MacKiev software developers. Ancestry does not make any family tree software anymore.

Yeah, that's right, sorry about that. I said Ancestry because the have a full video series on how to navigate through it.
I did not know that. That's pretty ****ty I must say. They charge a lot of money and still haven't implemented such a basic feature.
Gedcom is an open source file standard, it wasn't created by Ancestry.com, it's free for anyone to use. There was briefly an attempt to include media files in a gedcom, but it was abandoned, probably because file sizes were too big and not all software supported it.
"Support for embedding media directly was dropped in the draft 5.5.1 standard."
Also, you don't have to be a paying subscriber of Ancestry.com to download your gedcom.
