Can anyone recommend a good genealogy/family tree software or website? I'd like one that is free (if possible, but not mandatory) and doesn't force you to download spyware or evil-ware! Thanks!

My daughter-in-law's brother works for Geni - he's been with them since they started. Great website and free to boot! You can create family trees complete with pics and news items.

I use this one:

Personal Ancestral File or PAF is a genealogy software provided by FamilySearch, a website operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is available as freeware.

Go with the p.a.f. I have it and it works well. There are some extensions you can buy for it to enhance its capabilities I think. And most other programs can read a paf I believe. Hey, if I can figure out how to use it, it's gotta be easy. Check out the website: familysearch.org for all kinds of lds help in your search. Really amazing and helpful.

I have been using Legacy for quite some time and really like it. You can download a trial version for free. You can upgrade for around $30.00, if you want to. I really like it. Check it out Legacy Family Tree Genealogy Software

Wholly Gene's is good too but it is a bit sophisticated for the new user.

I've also been using Legacy (free version), since 2003. I can't remember the name of the first program I tried, but that one turned out to be a pain to use.
