This death certificate
http://www.sos.mo.gov/TIF2PDFConsume...ln=1060163.pdf

The cause of death looks like Hemopheigia or Hemopleigia.

Hemophagia is unlikely. She lived to be 91, so if she had this condition a long time, she would have needed frequent blood transfusions, and that was unlikely back then. If she had this disease, she probably would not have lived to be 91.

I could also be Hemiplegia, which is possible at her age. That is paralysis of half of the body. Maybe from a stroke?

I'm leading toward the second, but I'm pretty sure that it's "hemoph" not "hemopl" or "hemipl." If it is "hemoph," it is probably a blood disorder of some kind.

My first thought was hemophilia, but that's a "g" not an "l."

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hemophagia would just mean bleeding excessively. Hemiplegia, I agree that indicates a stroke.

Could mean bleeding in the brain following a stroke.

Here is a site with some links:

I searched with several alternate spellings, and from what I could figure out, the archaic spelling was most likely "hemophlegia", the now antiquated term for CVA/stroke. One link cited a case of "embolic hemophlegia", another "paralysis and hemophlegia"...and the rest appeared consistent.

It may have been the combination of "hemo-" (blood) and "phlego" (heat/sluggish)...which makes sense if they thought of a stroke being the condition of blood too sluggish to reach the brain (or sluggish due to clot).

I found the word (hemophligia or hemophlegia) in the following sites:

Brooklyn medical journal - Google Books

Santa Cruz County History - Santa Cruz Public Libraries

http://www.bcplib.org/PDF/Genealogy/...rtificates.pdf

Sumner County, TN Death Records - November, 1921

Greenwood Cemetery, Part I (http://jodaviess.ilgenweb.net/cemeteries/Greenwood.htm - broken link)

Lawrence County, Illinois (http://lawrence.ilgenweb.net/military/soldier_home/a_r_jackman.html - broken link)

Hazel O. READY b. 22 MAR 1892 Warren, Trumbull Co, OH d. 11 SEP 1933 Warren, Trumbull Co, OH (http://kinsweb.org/Genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I5543&tree=HKM - broken link)

Hope that helps.

Read this on the back of a DC:

cerebrospinal fever = meningitis

croup = diphtheria

typhoid fever, a digestive illness, was sometimes recorded as typhoid pneumonia (?)

puerperal = an injury or illness related to childbirth in the mother
