penguin_kernel....I am not saying their story isn't true..but sometimes a family story are just that "a family story". Would be a gruesome death though if something like this did happen... And I'm sure they did.. back then ppl were careless and didn't have the medical means to take care of someone that would have been hurt. I have heard of logging stories where someone has accidentally falling in the shredding machines, or gotten killed by falling trees..etc..but again unless it is actually found in the newspaper archives or hospital/death records.. it is just a story. Just saying for ppl to be careful with the legendary stories out there floating around the family. One thing I have learned about doing Genealogy is families wants proof.. records that prove these stories. I could write a book on the stories I have heard from elder family members but can't proof not one.. they are just that.. a story!

Daniel Boone died from overeating Sweet Potatos; or so says his death certificate (had a history teacher brought in a copy to show us, cause no one believed him.)

My mom, 87, said back in the old days people were said to have died of "heart failure". The doctors listed it as the cause of death since when your heart stopped, you died.

This is an interesting thread. Does anyone know what would happen if you eat A LOT of extremely spicy hot chili peppers at once? What will happen to your stomach? Could you die of that?

My grand father took his family to swim at a lake, and while sitting on the dock, was struck by an airplane and killed. (actually he pushed his wife in and was unable to get himself clear in time ). I've read the account from online archives of the local paper to verify.
Another friend of mine had his grandfather killed when the bomber plane (b-29?) hit the Empire State building. He was not in the plane. Didn't check that one out, but have no reason to doubt him.

I saw a baby that died of "thrashing," but no doctor was present at her death.

Probably a seizure. From thrashing one's limbs or thrashing about.

One of my ancestors died in the Civil War. His military record says, "lost in wilderness. Supposed a died." Could be Wilderness, VA or could be somewhere in the wilderness, don't know which.

I love to go to very old cemeteries. On the headstones it usually tells how the person died, like "run over by a wagon" or some such tragedy.
