I am very confused.

I know this is probably a long shot, but any info at all would be great. Or at least some opinions. I posted this on Genforum as well, in the Charlton and Prince forums.

Firstly, I have Lucian B. Charlton. He was born 1844 in Virginia. He married a woman named Mary. Their children being William (born 1858), Martha (1861), Julia (1864). Possibly also a daughter named V. born 1870 and a son named Albert born 1873.

1870 Census Reynolds Co., MO
CHARLTON Lucian 25 M W Farmer born in Virginia
-------- Mary 35 F W Keeping House born in Illinois
-------- William 12 M W born in Missouri
-------- Martha 9 F W born in Missouri
-------- Julia 6 F W born in Missouri

These children are all listed as being named Charlton, but are too young to be Lucian's kids. Why would they have his name? I would say his birthdate is wrong, but it's consistent on the 1880 and 1900 census records.

This is the 1880 census

Albert PRINCE Son M S W 6 MO VA VA
Franklin PRINCE Son M S W 4 MO VA VA
Marian R. PRINCE Son M S W 3 MO VA VA

Albert may be Albert Prince or Albert Charlton. His death certificate says Charlton and lists Lucian as his father. But, why are they named Prince here? Mary may have died between 1877 (Marian's birthdate) and 1880, but why do her three sons have different names? Did she divorce Lucian and remarry? Did she have an affair? Is it just a census mistake? And why did the Prince boys father not get custody of them?

Lucian Charlton's 1900 Census says he is married to Lavina. They married in 1886 and have Ellen (1891), James (1892), Liva (1895), Dollie (1899). Lucian died in 1918 and his wife Lavina in 1933. That I am sure of.

What the heck is going on here?

YOu didnt' state any relationships listed on the 1870 and it's too early in the a.m. for me to remember. Gonna assume it doesn't.

The children in the 1870 census may be Lucian's siblings. Perhaps the parents had died.

I've seen that in my family tree where the oldest kids took care of the younger ones when the parents had died.

As for 1880? Again, it's too early.

There is an 1860 census as well, but I can't see it on familysearch. And I can't see the image for the 1880 one.

The 1870 census does not show relationship between the family members. But it does show the kids were born in Missouri, Lucian born in Virginia, and Mary was born in Illinois.

The 1850 census records started on one page and ended on the next. Here are their numbers

Film Number: 444952
Digital GS Number: 4206384
Image Number 00052
Reference Number: 40
Dwelling 310
Household ID 310

and

Film Number: 444952
Digital GS Number: 4206384
Image Number 00053
Reference Number: 6
Dwelling 310
Household ID 310

Lucian's 1850 census record looks like this:
1850 Montgomery, Virginia

John W. Charlton 54 M Laborer
Araminta 42 F
Malinda J. 17 F
Francis C. 15 M
Julia A. 13 F
John P. 12 M
Charles E. 11 M
Elizabeth 10 F
Frank 6 M
Lucian B 5 M
James H. 4 M
William T 1 M

All born in Virginia

Araminta Charlton shows up in the 1860 Census in Wayne Co., MO. I can't see it, but she was born in 1805 in Virginia, according to it.

The 1870 census shows an Araminta Charlton being born in 1812 in Virginia, and living in Wayne Co., MO.

Araminta Charlton 58 F Farming
Elizabeth 27 F Keeping House
James 22 M
William 18 M
Sarah Ann 17 F
Frank 15 M

Keep in mind, Lucian's death certificate mentions his father being named Anthony, not John as shown in the 1850 census, unless it's John Anthony Charlton or Anthony John Charlton.

I can't see the 1880 census, but it lists Aramanta Charlton living in Des Arc, Iron Co., MOHer husband was also there. He was born 1794 in virginia.
She was born 1812 in Virginia
Her kids are Lizzie Charlton and Mollie Charlton

I believe Lucian may have had a son named Cluster James Charlton, born around 1898. Araminta's maiden name may have been Akers

I find it rather strange this adult has four children under the age of 10 MONTHS. I suspect someone didn't do a very good job of transcribing.

MO is for Missouri, not Months.

I would assume anyway.

Lucian's says VA, for Virginia.
