Hello,

I'm moving back home to the San Francisco Bay Area from the Chicago area. When I moved here I drove I-80, but I had a friend with me. This time, I will be by myself with my two kids. I left CA September 29th and made it to Chicago around October 4th I believe. After Wyoming we basically took our time as I was tired and there were some weather delays.

This time, I will be leaving September 1st. I did the drive before, but I guess since this time I will be alone with my two kids I'm kind of afraid. My main concerns are weather issues through the plains and the CA/NV mountain area this time of year. It was late September when I made the drive and there was snow up on the mountains but luckily I did not have to put on chains (didn't have any anyways ). Is there snow up on the mountains in early September? I didn't enjoy that part of the trip, then out by Winnemucca, NV I drove through a pretty nasty storm. We stayed an extra day in Cheyenne, WY because there were some storms ahead in the plains, one of which produced a tornado. The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful weather wise.

To anyone familiar with this route what are the conditions like in the plains in early September? I can deal with a little wind and rain, but I am terrified of tornadoes. I also do not want to drive over the CA/NV mountains. Is there another route that I can take which is better than I-80? I don't mind a few extra days/miles added to the trip. Just want to take my time and get there safe.

Thanks!

You should be OK during September. Tornadic thunderstorms are possible on the plains during that time, but not all that common.

And, yes, it can snow in the Sierra's in September, but it won't last long if it does.

As for going around the high Sierra's? Yeah, you can do that, but it would require going a LONG way out of route.

Early September shouldn't be too bad for weather in the plains. I would take 80 for sure.
