Wow, what a great thread and just what I needed to stumble upon. What is currently pushing me out is my soon to be next door neighbor. There are already problems and he doesn't even live here yet. I've really disliked this town for years, and my house has been the only positive in it. Since that has now changed, it is time to move on. My only regret is spending so much time in a place I have hated. Years of my life I will never get back.

BUT, I am a believer in the fresh start category. Not sure I can go to really where I'd like to be, but I can still stay in the same state and move to a smaller place. I have to be here for health insurance reasons, which is kind of unfortunate. Then again, I could just throw the dice and risk being uninsured for six months, go anywhere I want and then go on the govt PCIP plan (for high risk people).

This thread has been an inspiration and I don't feel NEARLY so alone after reading it.

How does one actually just get up and move? I mean, do you find work before you go or just risk it and go? I've found it very difficult to find entry level work in Computer Science since many things I was good at have become outsourced and downsized.

You just do it. I've done it several times in my life with no job lined up and always landed on my feet. Now - maybe not the BEST jobs, but jobs nonetheless. It takes guts and motivation and a belief that things can be better around the bend.

Think of the pioneers, if you will. They had no idea what was in front of them, yet they forged on.

A divorce, living for years in a city I did not enjoy, neighbors....all had a hand in the move. But mostly I felt the intuitive "move now or else" feeling.

You have heard "live where you vacation"......that is what I am doing, moving by myself to a fun coastal city and without a job too. That is not for everyone...it is a bit risky and depends on your financial status and personal issues. So far it feels very empowering...and also very much the RIGHT thing.

Good luck with your decision and best wishes for your future~

Thank you for all your responses. We are both at that stage now where we do it now or never. So we are beginning our road to getting out of here. We plan to be somewhere new by June 2012. Where will we be ; dont have a clue. France is in the cards, but so is North Carolina.
Just want something where we have decent scenery, laid back type of lifestyle, good schools, and we dont have to work 50 hours a week. I think many people are in that frame of mind ; is it the age, I dont know. We are in our mid 40's.
