I am moving cross country, and don't own any big-ticket items. At the same time, I can't fit all of it in my car. Any suggestions for a cheap method to move the stuff that I can't fit in the car? The smallest space in Upack (5 linear feet) would cost $1,000 to move. The ironic thing is, all my possessions are probably worth about $1,000. I won't be bringing any furniture or very large things. Probably the largest item would be my golf clubs and bag. My car is not able to tow a trailer.

I hope you get some great answers. I don't really have any.

We are trying to pare down our stuff as much as we can before moving from New Orleans to Missouri. To be honest, we have found the same as you have found - - that it would be almost as cheap to buy everything new once we get there, as to move it.

So, we have been making trips to GoodWill several times a week to donate things, in preparation for this move. We will probably still need to rent a small truck for things that aren't replaceable or are of sentimental value. Fewer and fewer things fall into those categories lately, though, when I think about what a hassle it is (as well as expense) to move very much stuff.

I have heard of people Fed-Ex'ing boxes of stuff to themselves in the new location. I have no idea of prices, though.

Sounds like it's time to part with a lot of your "stuff".

For what it's worth and the cost of shipping it ... you can sell it now for whatever it will bring and replace it at your new location for very little money. It might even be a "wash" given the cost of shipping it.

1) Head to your local Goodwill store
2) Donate your cheap but voluminous "stuff"
3) Get forms for tax deductions
4) Move to your new location and buy new cheap "stuff" to replace it all.
5) When tax day comes, claim a deduction from donating your cheap stuff from #2.

When I have moved far distances I sold a lot on craigslist. It is just too costly to have it shipped or moved if one has inexpensive items. I would focus on the items you don't want to part with or are expensive.Pack those in the car. It is amazing how much a person can fit in a small car with the right way of packing. Then at the new location try to either live without the items you sold or buy inexpensive.

Just got quoted for Amtrak package express. About $50, plus another 46 cents per pound over 100lb. 500lb limit. Box size limit 36" x 36 x 36. This is for a 2000 mile trip.

Without knowing how much stuff you have I can't really suggest much.

UShip.com - Ebay's version of a shipping auction. You post what you need shipped and people bid on what they would cost to move it. Just make sure you choose someone with great feedback. A lot of people get on there and have no idea what they are doing, then never show up to move you.

Car Topper - They are about $100-400 depending on the size, go on top of your car like a huge suitcase
