I'm leaving Las Vegas because it has more of what I don't want than what I do want. Please help me figure out the best fit for me.
I am looking for:
A mid-size to large metropolitan area
Affordable rents
Skews toward Democrat (even if the state is Republican)
Real, down-to-earth people who are authentic, not pretentious
Single folks in their 30s and 40s looking for good friends and relationships
A large, diverse, creatively thriving literary/arts/indie music scene (not just one clique)
A job market where a writer/nonprofit professional has a fighting chance
Lots of opportunities to enjoy nature
Walkable, not sprawly areas
Please give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you should take a look at several Bay Area communities, including Palo Alto, Berkeley, Marin, and Santa Cruz. They are not inexpensive, but they seem to fit the rest of your goals.
Honestly the affordability thing sounds like the biggest challenge - thriving liberal communities with active art scene in or near decent sized population base IMO tend to have a high cost of living. When looking at the more artsy liberal areas I am aware of I think of towns others just mentioned, in addition, Boulder CO, Eugene OR, Jackson Hole WY, Some Suburbs around Portland and Seattle, Touisty places in the SW like Cave Creek AZ, and so on - to me not the most reasonable in terms of cost of living.
Maybe try something more rural - might still be able to freelance towards/for pop. centers. Or find a more politically centrist area with more independents. It may give you some more options to consider - I live in a conservative area, but the arts are active and the open mindedness is quite surprising (especially in the 30-40 crowd)

I would say Boulder colorado.. however the whole... down-to-earth... yep... down to earth alright.. (something I don't think of when I think liberal and down to earth in the same sentence - considering what i've seen)..
close to the metro area of Denver... LOTS AND LOTS of nature...

Boulder is quite expensive.
