Hello, I was wondering exactly what freight shipping is all about.
In a couple months my boyfriend and I will be moving from Florida to South Carolina.

Everything we have is packed in those plastic storage bins- there are about 10 of them. The main things packed in them are clothes, books, and various things such as paperwork, cds, alarm clock, office supplies, etc.

Other things that I would like to bring but am definitely going to leave behind if I cannot afford is: a dresser, a hope chest, a couch, and a queen size bed.

Uhaul is a bit expensive, and was wondering if freight shipping was a cheaper alternative. I know extremely little about exactly what it is and how it works, and can't find enough info. on the web.

You can ship it all as regular freight via just about any freight line, such as ABF, Roadway/Yellow, Conway or some other regional carrier. If you do, be sure and take out insurance on the shipment as it may get lost or separated. You can ship it as "prepaid" or "COD." I'd recommend "prepaid." It will be charged to you as an LTL shipment (Less Than Trailer Load) and the cost will vary from carrier to carrier, but not by much.

Or, you can contact ABF about their moving service where they bring you a trailer for your exclusive use. You load it, they deliver it, and you unload it in South Carolina. I expect the cost of that, as opposed to an LTL freight shipment, might let you take all that stuff you're intending to leave behind.

ABF has a minimum charge of 5 foot of trailer space. For Michigan to Missouri it's going to cost $1009, which is just a little bit more than renting a truck and driving would be, and for us not having to drive a uhaul halfway across the country is worth it.
