Help! We are a family of 8 with young children and are moving to Waianae. We are now hearing nightmare stories about homeless people and people living on the beach in tents? My husband is military and we are a biracial family...I am really worried? Should I be?

you should re post this in the hawaii folder you will get better answers. waianae does have a tough reputation. I would suspect some areas of it are better then others. there are lots of areas to live besides waianae if you are worried. you should live in the safest area possible, don't sign a lease until you find a place you feel safe. good luck

Thank you, I also posted in the Hawaii forum. Problem is the deposit has already been made. , We are renting off of retired military who lived there and they told us it was very nice and never had problems.

I hope that is the case. there will always be bad people even in "good" areas. be friendly and open. respect the culture as we say here and keep your ears and eyes open.

To ease your mind somewhat... places that have a reputation for being 'paradise' always have a greater share of homeless... the weather is more moderate for one. For another, there are some that CHOOSE to live in a tent on the beach.

Stick with other military families until you get to know the area better, and you'll be fine.
