Reality is..people do want to move here. There are those who move here and wouldn't dream of living anywhere else.
Then there are those who move here, hate it, and leave within 2 years (some have moved as soon as 3-4 months )
Then there are those who move here, dislike it, but is also drawn to it at the same time. That would be me.
Love/hate relationship? Hehe. I know, that's how I felt about Phoenix, good things to like, but enough things not to. Santa Fe has a specific vibe so you like that or don't.
Looking at this thread for the first time I find it both amazing and rather sad that half the posters who took the poll hate where they live. Life is too short to be miserable if you have the ways and the means to change your situation. In our case, we grew increasingly less happy with where we were situated but like most, we were somewhat stuck there due to our occupations. As we were coming to the end of them, however, we began some earnest research over several years on where to live in retirement. Now were there, right where we want to be and we have absolutely no regrets nor any intention of moving again unless we absolutely have to do to health issues. So far, so good! Probably the best part of that is we were in absolute agreement as to where to settle. I can't imagine that that could be an issue for some couples. Fortunately we dodged that bullet.
I live in Portland. lots of people dream of living in the Pacific Northwest and whatnot for various reasons. It could definitely be worse. I'm a native and have lived here off and on since I was born. Oftentimes I feel out of place here, like it's not really where I should be. The summers are nice and make the city a livlier place, but I personally don't dwell on the weather too much. The people and how I relate to them have a larger impact and people around here don't do too much for me. It's not really the "promised land" for me so much as it is the inherited. I would probably not choose to live here if I didn't already, though it's a nice place in many respects.
