Yes and then you think about the fact that your tv/washer/dryer ect is over 5 years old it is outdated and might not work once you haul it somewhere else, find someone who can use it right where you are...

Toss it and start fresh. I would start with the furnished room until you know where you want to live in your new hometown neighborhood wise.

You can buy nice stuff when you get there. I only shop thrift stores and my whole house is second-hand, you'd never know the difference. If you discard most of your stuff, you open up your options when you arrive, instead of hunting for a place to accomodate your furniture. also, don't forget, the stuff you donate is a tax write-off.

We sold just about everything when we last moved. I do wish we would have kept some of the furniture. I never thought I would feel sentimental about mere stuff but I did.
