I will be moving to St. Louis from Eastern NC in a month. I'm trying to plan the best route. When I went to Illinois a few years ago, I went up through WV and KY. However, Google Maps has two different ways. I can either go through WV and Kentucky again or I can go down I-40 through Knoxville and Nashville, then get on I-24.
I didn't have a problem with the mountains in WV, especially since it was a larger highway, but I fear that the mountains in Western NC and Eastern TN may be pretty bad with a moving truck. I've never been past Asheville on I-40, so that stretch is unknown to me.
Has someone taken both routes before? Which one is best?

I'd agree with that. I-40 doesn't hold a candle to I-24.
The drivers on the other hand....
I have a video of a driver on I-40 in between knox and ashe villes and he was driving IN REVERSE at 5 mph!! Clearly drunk. He had traffic backed up for quite a ways.
How is I-24 from Nashville into Illinois? I have experience with the WV and KY route, so that's why I'm leaning that way. However, seeing some new sites is always nice.
