I will be separating from the military in a little over a year and am being proactive at trying to figure out where I will be living.

I will be going to school full time, so a city with a good college is a must. Here are other likes of mine:

- Bigger cities are good (I enjoy the diversity and things to do)
- Cost of living on the lower side (Gotta love being a student..)
- Will consider a place that gets snow, but I'd ideally like no snow

Honestly, that's about it. I grew up in North Dakota, spending my first 23 years here. I've been in NorCal the last 2 years, and lets just say that I will be glad to leave this state; I can't stand this place. Asinine laws and ridiculous taxes, amongst other things, are just a couple reasons. California is a no.

What places have you folks been very satisfied with as a student?

First post: Glad to join this community! There is an abundance of information here.

Personally - I haven't been a student there - but I recommend Austin, Texas.

Depending on what your going to school for I'd say providence Rhode Island. Johnson and whales has an amazing business program as well as culinary arts( that's what there known for). If your looking more into law or medical I'd say charleston sc but live 30 mins away in Summerville for lower cost of living and still a lot to do.

I suggest a place close to a VA, so that you have a community and resources from other veterans to help you. If you have family in ND, you may want to stay on this side of the country. No snow? Well, that would be Texas. Arizona. Personally, I like Spokane, or Portland.

Portland and Seattle. If you don't mind the heat, Phoenix. North Carolina.

I hated my time in Dallas, El Paso and Austin, so I won't recommend that hot, nothing to do but eat and drink over rated state with it's over inflated ego's. I couldn't get out fast enough.

A map of the United States and a dart. Works pretty well if you are willing to go where the dart sends you and adapt from there for your needs.

My Grandparents decided to move, solely for tax reasons, and moved to Nevada, to escape high state income taxes. As good reason as any, they also liked the weather, dry, warm year round, not too cold in winter, no snow, close to VA hospital, for both of them. And close to major airport for people to visit them, and they could travel.

UNLV has some good majors, and cost of living is pretty low. Lots of jobs there...

Phoenix, Arizona - Good clean city, diverse, close to to other major cities like LA/San Diego/Las Vegas. Also cost of living is very affordable. Yes. there is the heat factor, but if you can stand it...I say its a likely choice. Check on it!

Welcome to CDF!

I'd agree with the person who suggested Austin, TX, and the one who mentioned North Carolina. Good mix of political stripes, good VA care, good schools...good luck to you!
