Just read the following blog post from Padmapper after I tried to look for housing.

Bye Bye Craigslist :-(

This is super frustrating and sad! I love the ability to look for housing in a specific area, and actually see it on a map. I'm looking for housing right now in a small town with very few "regular" apartments. Sites like Craigslist or local newspapers are my main resource, but not being totally familiar with areas, I still rely on the map to get a sense of what I'm looking at.

I still like Hotpads and Zillow, but Padmapper has been my go-to because of the Craiglist info.

That's a shame. My main issue with searching for an apartment on craigslist is that so many people use keywords in an attempt to get more people to view a listing, but all it really does is clog up the search results. Padmapper has been helpful in finding an apartment in places I actually want to live.

I wonder if this is a precursor to craigslist launching a similar map based apartment listing option.

That's sad, I remember when I was looking into other cities, I used Padmapper mainly, and most of the listings were through CL.

I don't quite understand why they have such a problem with this, when Padmapper is directing people to their site that might not normally have gone there otherwise.

It's disappointing. I was using that to help find rentals in certain areas of a new town. Since it's a big place, I don't know all the neighborhoods and streets. Craigslist doesn't have a map feature, so padmapper was great for that.

Padmapper is now useless.

Craigslist listings are ~75% spam though, was padmapper able to weed out the spam?

Mostly--especially the multiple listings.

Spam numbers can vary by location (maybe larger cities have less?). That number is closer to around 10% here (SF) and Craigslist is pretty much the only source for apartments. It's a shame, though, because Padmapper was really useful when you had certain boundaries within neighborhoods that you were trying to target.

I came across a site called mapliv.com today. They aggregate craigslist info very nicely.

I guess Craigslist is now suing Padmapper...
