I have a 16 ft truck from Penske rented for tomorrow for a one way from Oklahoma City to Portland, OR. 8 days, unlimited miles. Includes the full car trailer, even a dolly thrown in for $10. Total, with taxes (no insurance) comes to $804
Didn't you get unlimited miles, just rent for a trip (and they calculate miles and give you a price up front?)? We did, one way to NC from MI and then another time from NC to AL, which are quite a distance for each move. Sorry you had that experience but I honestly thought all long distance travel was kinda a one price, and then when you return it if there are scratches, dents, etc then they charge extra.
It sounds like a local trip, with the truck being returned to the original rental location. In that case, you pay a daily rate + charge per mile.
In my experience, Penske is the best of the truck rental companies. Much better equipment than U-Haul, and they work with you if need to keep the truck an extra day or two. U-Haul trucks are ok for local moves, but I would not drive one of their trucks long distance. Some of them look like US army surplus from the '80s! Penske is the best!
I've used Penske and it was a positive experience and the truck was clean and new.
I moved about 600 miles back in 1998.
Just to throw this out there... the Penske truck I had going from OKC to Portland worked out great. It was a new truck, had less than 15k miles. It even had an aux port which was amazing.

^this. I've had lots of problems with U-Haul. I finally made the switch to Penske and was more than happy. Drove from Dallas to Chicago. Then from Couer D'alene, Idaho to Chicago to Dallas in Penske with zero problems. The rates for all 3 seem a bit high, of course if you reserve months in advance, it's much cheaper.

WOW, that's a great price. Your mileage is approximately 2000 and mine is 2200 but they quoted me $1198 for the truck and $484 for the car carrier, with the AAA and Internet discount.

How did you get such a great price?
Just call them directly. They are willing to earn your business. I've got unbeatable deal for my move.
I've never used anyone but U-Haul, but they are terrible, every time I get a truck that is dirty and falling apart. I'm afraid the truck won't even make it 10 miles, never actually had one break on me though (nevertheless terrifying considering all the crazy paperwork they make you sign, basically signing your life away if you get in an accident with their terrible vehicles).
I'm desperately looking for another company, but not sure what is the best, but based on everything I've read here, I'm going to try Penske....
We had a U-Haul break down in Texas, on the way to Arizona. The guy came and fixed it quick, nice guy too, but it was scary--thinking of having to unload/reload to a new truck. My husband packed it tight as a drum and we had everything in there.
