I've moved a lot, but I've never really had to deal with find moving furniture. In my 20's, I had garage sale furniture that I simply sold to the next tenant and I could throw all my personal belongings in my car. After that, we were moved by our employer, and the company picked up the tab.
Now we are considering moving to another state for retirement. We'll be paying the bills this time, so I need some suggestions on how to move our stuff economically. I hate to sell our furniture, but if it costs more to move them than to buy new that would be worth considering.
The cheapest way I found when I moved to another state was to rent a moving truck and drive it myself. Luckily I had friends on both ends to help me. I also have paid a mover to drive my stuff about 1,000 miles since I had no one to help me unpack (can't carry furniture alone!). All things considered it wasn't cheap, but certainly cheaper than buying all new stuff.

I agree with this, though I have known people who sold it all and bought new.....somehow I don't think it evened out.
Some of the most common recommendations didn't work for me because I moved to a very rural part of the country. But if you are moving from a less rural area, you might try:
pods
Upack
These two do the moving, you do the packing. Pods would have been my choice. Neither would make the haul (for me).
And, I believe there is a web site that helps locate a mover for you (perhaps just simily "www.move.com."
In the end, as I had all my possessions in storage while I was searching for a place, I ended up using a local mover recommended by the storage folks.

ABF does it all. You ge a container OR a truck trailer or part of it. you just pay for the space you use (not by weight); and ABF picks it up and delivers it to you new house --- all included for about what you OAY TO RENT A truck and do it all yourself. It is pretty hard to beat.
