We did pods and it probably cost is about $4000. But we started packing one in April, had that stored off site, then got a second, third and finally a fourth. We moved over 400 miles and did the move in July. We had all four pods emptied by the beginning of August.
I liked Pods as I could take my time to fill it and empty it. We were selling a few properties so it was easier to store everything in the pods.
I called abf and they only gave us 5 days to empty it. We packed it ourselves and had helpers to help empty the first one. Then our teenagers helped with the rest.
PLEASE NOTE: U boxes are SMALL!! If you have a regular one bedroom meaning apartment with a bedroom set, small dining set, living room and boxes it will not work with one U Box. Those things are made for college students living in a dorm or a studio off campus. I sold my living room and my washer and dryer and still they couldn't fit the rest of my one bedroom. A one bedroom apartment really requires two boxes! So now I have to dump my dining room chairs, some decor accessories and ship boxes that didn't fit. I was going to hitch a trailer but it looks like my car is not made to pull a trailer. Wish I had just gotten the two U Boxes! So now I have to call U Haul in the early morning and ask if my car can pull a trailer. If not plan B is to throw out most of what's left, ship what I can and load my car with the rest.
I have a 16' pack rat in my drive now and it is holding suprisingly more than I would have thought unfortunately I'll need at least one more and possibly two. They are charging me 2800 to store then ship for one container and 1200 for a second if needed. They are completely metal and seem very sturdy. Mayflower did give me a slightly cheaper quote but I had already booked with Pack rat so just stayed with them. Should have this one filled tomorrow and then I call for a pickup. Will store locally until my house is sold and then will order the next one.
Just got my box picked up. I filled it completely no crack unfilled but it was all small lightweight boxes. I was shocked to find out I was way over the 6000 lb limit. What they don't tell you is that includes the weight of the container. The driver fortunately took it anyway but I will have to get a second one for furniture etc and am worried how heavy that one will be. There's really no way to pack one of these things full and stay within the weight limit. Nothing I packed weighed more than 10 lbs most of the boxes were 5 lbs or less. I was surprised though at how much I was able to get in one though. It didn't look that big.
Has anyone here used United Mayflower? I can't find much info around here in the way of reviews on them. They seem to have a nicer interior and offer a service for a couple guys to help you pack the pod (as opposed to PODS). But no idea how expensive that is. Do PODS come with the tie down straps, or do you need to buy them? I'm looking at PODS vs. United Mayflower, and need to make a move on this pretty quickly.
For the next 6 months or so, I'll be storing the pod in a secure storage facility with whichever company, then I'll be doing a long-distance move, but I don't know what state I'll be going to yet.
I'm looking for a company that can deliver the pod on time (preferably long before 5 PM), either bring a couple guys for help or I'll hire a couple guys from somewhere else, and can come pick up the pod a couple hours later.
Be very careful that whichever mover you choose will deliver to ALL possible future locations you may end up at. Both of those movers have regional blockages. I think Mayflower will not go to the south east US, etc.
ABS may have a larger range of delivery locations. And, sorry I have not yet used any of them.

For pod/cube-type service, it can an issue of where they have equipment to make the local pickup or delivery.
