I am moving soon and want to ship the car from west to east coast. Driving is not an option due to the lack of time.
1. Anyone has any recommendations (positive or negative) regarding any car shipping companies they used?
2. Is it OK to fill the car up with stuff? Do they allow that, and if so, do they charge extra and how much?
By the way, anyone knows what's the deal with yelp? I find a company, which seems to have decent rating based on 22 reviews (4/5 stars). Then at the bottom of the page, it says there are 122 reviews that are 'not recommended'. Of course, they don't factor into the ratings then. And almost all of them are 1 star reviews, unlike the stellar 'recommended' reviews. Not Recommended Reviews for Montway Auto Transport | Yelp
Carriers licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to transport motor vehicles can not handle household goods or personal effect unless also licensed to do so.
Most auto transport companies will refuse to pick up a vehicle that is loaded because they could be fined at every port-of-entry they cross or face the potential of losing their interstate operating authority.
Professional mover who are licensed will not allow anything to be transported in the interior of the vehicle because of the potential for damage. A child's car seat stored loose in the trunk of a car can severely damage both the interior and exterior of the vehicle because of the motion of the carrier.
A significant number of carriers that advertise on find-a-mover sites and reverse-auction platforms either do not have active motor carrier authority or the insurance required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Google uShip and you'll see what some of their users have complained about.
I have shipped some good in all the times I've shipped a vehicle. But you have to be reasonable, the most I've shipped were the set of spare tires/wheels that went with the car. Other times it's just been a suitcase of clothes.
Some shipping companies even specify a weight that they'll go up to in terms of stuff they'll ship with the vehicle.
Yelp is notorious for their weird biases in the reviews they post and filter, so I've stopped using it except to find places and learn their address and hours.
First off, I'd use Angie's List, not Yelp. Yeah, Angie's List costs, but to me, it's worth it. If time keeps you from driving the car across the country, could you hire someone else to do it? I know of someone who hired a friend's grown son to drive their car across the country. They paid for all gas, all lodging, and for a flight home. I know the young man they hired - he was about 25 at that time - and he loved doing it.
