Something I've been tackling lately (since I had to plow through a storage closet to get the xmas stuff out, and now I'm having to put it back in), are boxes that I've moved from place to place but never opened up - they just go straight to a storage closet! If I'm moving a box just for the sake of moving a box and I hadn't ever opened it until it was time to move again, I'm taking a very critical look at those items. This last year I've been on a downsizing kick, as I'm getting ready to put myself on a trajectory to a final retirement residence of the smallest size possible, so I'm making myself get less sentimental about stuff, especially if it never leaves a box.

When I was in my house I could put stuff on the curb and it would be gone shortly. There’s many online sites to give stuff away and thrift stores will send a truck if you have a lot of stuff.

There is a Facebook group called the Buy Nothing Project. It's hyper local to just your neighborhood and adjoining ones.

We moved in 2012 after 18 years and it was a royal pain. We never got rid of anything. If it wasn't being used, it went in a closet or garage. I'm never doing that again! Now, if I have an object that isn't being used, I list it on the Buy Nothing group. It's really rewarding to give stuff away to neighbors who want or need it instead of just putting it in a donation box. You can also ask for stuff or to borrow things so you don't have to buy stuff you only need once or twice. If you have a Facebook account, check to see if there is one in your area.

Edited to add: Our neighborhood's BNP is on Facebook - the website lists an app but originally it was hosted through a Facebook group.

I just sell everything on Craigslist. Nothing just gets given away!

Adamson, I bought myself a new tv and had a 9 year old one that was 50 inches. I put it for free on Nextdoor and had 20 people want it. I gave it to a young family with little kids that were thrilled to get it. Being generous feels good for both parties.

But it doesn't pay for the move!

Why would you expect it to? There's a point of diminishing return (time, effort, inconvenience, etc.) that applies to most decisions people make...up to each person to figure out when they've passed it. You're approaching the realm of being penny wise and pound foolish.

LOL - I'll let you know when I get there! In the meantime, in all my years I have never posted something on Craigslist that someone didn't want to buy within 24 hours. I've never had to resort to giving anything away.

I am in a Buy Nothing group and am in the process of trying to give stuff away that I don't want, but is still nice enough that others might want it. The problem is, it's slowly becoming more of a chore to "gift" all this stuff than it might be to just gather it in a box and give it to Good Will or something. None of it is worth selling either. Selling would add more steps since I would have to arrange to meet the buyer etc. For what, $2 an item? My time is more valuable than that. And I am thinking the same even with this Buy Nothing group. After spending about four days giving stuff away and seeing how much time it's taking me, I might give this a couple more days, but four days into gifting 4-5 items a day, I am getting annoyed with the hassle and think I am going to just box the rest and donate it.

Luckily, I sold a lot of stuff at our community yard sale this fall. But even then, it wouldn't have been very profitable if I didn't have a bike and an X-Box to sell. Those two items accounted for most of the money I made that day. The next community yard sale is after my house is on the market. I don't want to be sitting in my driveway selling tchotchkes when I rather have buyers looking at the property.

Now I have sold some bigger ticket items on Facebook. For example, I sold a curio cabinet for $150 and before that I sold a nice flatware set for $250. But if it's not an item that's going to fetch me $50-$100 or more, I don't think it's worth the effort. I rather just donate it. Time is money friend.

Had friends selling a house. Took them darn near two years to 'clean it out,' but they put their stuff in storage (things they couldn't sell). Then, they didn't have enough room in their condo (which they had in addition to the house) to put all their junk. So when they moved into the condo, they still had to get rid of their junk. She wanted to sell everything for overinflated prices (30 yr old stuff). I think they wound up giving most of it away eventually but I'm not sure if to friends or just to Goodwill.

When I leave this house, the stuff I don't want will be given to Goodwill or that age-old Vermont tradition, put at the end of the driveway with a FREE sign on it. I don't want to deal with junk I should have gotten rid of long ago (my husband's junk is gonna be a real problem!)
