I recently moved to the city I am in now (roughly 9 months ago), I have a few interviews lined up and I might be moving if I land one of them. I would have to terminate my lease, and it will cost me a few months rent to do so. My question is this, in an effort to save money I could move with just my vehicle and the stuff I can pack into it, not very much? The rest of my things (washer/dryer, sofa, chair, ottoman, bed) would stay in a storage unit here in this city. I would move and start working, then save up money and probably just fly back here and rent a uhaul and drive my stuff down there later. I could do things this way or I could just go with an ABF U-pack, I would need to work with my potential new employer for relocation funds. Overall, I do not possess much money to move on, however, I would be an invest moving. I would have to have money for a place to live, so my money would be tied up in that and everyday normal costs, like food etc.
ABF charges 1600-1880 (depending if I want 2 movers to help me unload my stuff, as I wouldn't know anyone in the new location). If the job wants me to pay and then turn in receipts for reimbursement I'm not sure I could afford all this. What would you do? Store in storage? Negotiate with potential employer?
The possibility of your new employer paying for your move is very unlikely - so look at you paying for all of the costs. You don't indicate the distance, but, considering you would plan to fly back to pick up your things it sounds like it could be substantial.
Is the cost of storage (at least $100 per month), moving it to storage, airfare to come back, truck rental and gas to move stuff to your new location more than your items are worth? I suspect that your items on a second hand basis are worth a lot less than the cost to move them.
So, when you do land that new job, in this case I think it would be better to try to sell those items before you move.

My items are rather expensive, all leather furniture brand new washer/dryer set (front loaders), so the idea of me just selling them off is a no no. I will most likely just use a upack, and yes the employer will pay for relocation, I was just discussing the fact that most will reimburse, so I would need to have them pay for the upack upfront, which I'm sure will not be an issue.
Two options. Rent a truck with a auto-trailer/dolly and pull the car, or sell everything except what you can put in a small trailer you can pull. The optimum solution is the second. You can pick up furniture at a garage sale or estate sale for pennies on the dollar, or off Craigslist.
OK, so your response beat my response. Since you are getting relo costs, just remember to pack carefully in the Upack. You don't want a hole in the couch when you get there.
